Sustaining Our Literary Mission

Orchid: A Literary Review is published by Critical Connection Fiction Workshops, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and donations to Orchid are tax deductible. Unlike most literary journals, Orchid’s editorial staff operates independent of a university or college English department. All of our staff members work on a volunteer basis (and as you can see from other portions of this web site the work has clearly pushed them over the edge). Orchid’s operating funds come from subscriptions, donations, and our annual Fall fundraising party and auction. Our current goal is to keep paying the writers we publish. Donated funds would also help us to update our software and streamline our nationwide distribution.

Donate $50 to $99. The name of your choice will appear in one issue of Orchid and you will receive a complimentary year subscription for yourself or a gift subscription for another literature lover.
Donate $100 to $499. The name of your choice will appear in two issues of Orchid and you will receive a complimentary two year subscription for yourself or two gift subscriptions.
Donate $500 to $999. The name of your choice will appear in four issues of Orchid and you will receive a complimentary lifetime subscription to Orchid and three gift subscriptions.
Donate $1000 or more and the name of your choice will appear in every issue of Orchid and you will receive a special literary gift pack including: a lifetime subscription to Orchid, a $50 bookstore gift certificate, specially autographed copies of books by noted authors, and a two-year subscription for two other literary journals of your choice.

Fundraiser
Orchid's third annual fundraiser and auction held on November 3, 2005 was a success as usual. The readings by Steven Gillis and Laura Hulthén Thomas were excellent and we had a surprise guest reading by Orchid author Randy DeVita. Eager bidders snatched up coveted auction items from July Orringer, Aimee Bender, Amy Hempel, and Dan Mueller.

A new feature at last year’s fundraiser was a drawing for door prizes, gift certificates donated by area businesses and national journals and magazines. The following businesses helped inaugurate this fun aspect of our fundraising activities: The Ark, 316 South Main St., Ann Arbor, 734-998-2666, Busch’s Valu Land, 2240 Main St., Ann Arbor, 734-998-2666, Cafe Marie, 1759 Plymouth Rd., Ann Arbor, 734-662-2272, Erin Lauckern, Professional Massage Therapist, 734-998-2666, Falling Water Books and Collectibles, 213 South Main Street, Ann Arbor, 734-747-9810, Great Harvest Bread Company, 2220 South Main Street, Ann Arbor, 734-996-8890, BD’s Mongolian BBQ, 213 South Main Street, Ann Arbor, 734-913-0999, Nicola’s Books, 2513 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor, 734-662-4110, Seva Restaurant, 314 East Liberty St., Ann Arbor, 662-1111, Shaman Drum Bookshop , 311 - 315 South State Street, Ann Arbor, 662-7407. The following journals and magazines donated gift subscriptions as door prizes: Agni, Arkansas Review, Bomb, Folio, Greensboro Review, Gulf Coast, Inkspot Magazine, Journal of Ordinary Thought, Michigan Quarterly Review, Mid-American Review, North Dakota Quarterly, and Spire Press. This year we were pleased to add to the list of donors, Red Hot Lovers, 629 East University, Ann Arbor, 734-996-3663. Thanks to all who helped make this year's fundraiser a success.

Orchid Executive Editor Amy Sumerton draws a winning ticket for one of the many door prizes given away at this year's fundraiser.

Fundraising Goals
• Pay Writers!
• Update Software
• Increase Nationwide Distribution

This year's fundraiser was a great success in many ways. First of all, the funds raised will allow Orchid to continue its mission to promote the work of new and emerging fiction writers and help us meet the goals listed above. Secondly, it was just a great night for people who love great fiction to hang out, toss back a few drinks, and have a thoroughly fun evening.
