PRESENT

Orchid events take place throughout the year and in various parts of the country. Last Spring there was the NYC extravaganza mentioned below. Then, we had a great time at the Ann Arbor Book Festival on May 21, 2005 and at Hobart'sfundraiser that evening (This year's Ann Arbor Book Festival is Saturday, May 13 and more info about that appears below). On October 5, 2005 Keith and Amy had a rare opportunity to focus on their own fiction at a reading at Crazy Wisdom Tea Room. Keith read his story "Utility" from Blue Mesa Review and Amy read her dynamite new story, "Before You Know It." Read on for info about last year's Orchid fundraiser and other upcoming Orchid events. We also had a great time at this year's AWP conference in Austin, TX, March 8-11, 2006. Unfortunately the photos of that event didn't come out because the film was damaged.

May 14th 2005 was the date of a fun event in Brooklyn at Galapagos Art Space ( www.galapagosartspace.com ). The event was sponsored by Small Spiral Notebookand Orchid was one of several journals represented. Sarah Gerkensmeyer author of “Hank” from issue four read an excerpt from a new story. Orchid editors, Keith Hood, Amy Sumerton, and Wah-Ming Chang were also on hand. The other literary journals represented were: Pindeldyboz, Saint Ann's Review, Guernica, & Night Train. It was a truly incredible evening. Pictures from the event appear on both sides of this text.

Orchid's Third Annual Fundraiser and Auction held on November 3, 2005 was a success as usual. The readings by Steven Gillis and Laura Hulthén Thomas were excellent and we had a surprise guest reading by Orchid author Randy DeVita. Eager bidders snatched up coveted auction items from July Orringer, Aimee Bender, Amy Hempel, and Dan Mueller. Thanks to everyone who made last year's fundraiser successful.

Saturday, May 13, 2006—14+ literary journals will be in a special section of the 2006 Ann Arbor Book Festival Street Fair. The literary organizations represented include: Absinthe: New European Writing, Diagram, Frostproof Review, Hobart, The Kenyon Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Mid-American Review, NewPages.com, Orchid Literary Review, Prairie Margins, Small Spiral Notebook, The McGuffin, Third Coast, and TWO LINES: A Journal of Translation.
